Airline Approved Carriers

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

If you really want to take your pet with you for a trip, then you need to have a suitable pet carrier for the trip. You could just go with a standard carrying crate, but I bet you’ll want your pets to travel in a much higher level of comfort. The good news is that there are plenty of carriers available that will be able to stand up to the rigors of air travel while providing.

The first step is to go online and find a good niche store that has a full catalog of carriers. You will want to see everything that they have to offer before you commit. Most even have specific sections for airline pet carriers, so it should be easy to find what you need. Once the catalog is up, then it’s just a matter of picking your color and ensuring that the size is just right. You will also want to make sure that it has a comfortable interior for your pet, but that should be standard for most of the better carriers.

After you pick one, it’s basically done. Just order and pay. Your carrier will arrive soon and you’ll be ready to do. You may wish to confirm that it’s an airline approved carrier before you buy. It should only take a phone call to double check. Everything else should be fine though.

Rabbit Questions?

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

If I have a white female rabbit, and a black male rabbit, what are my odds of getting, white, or spotted, or black babies?

It depends entirely on the gene pool of each rabbit and their breeds. The patterns of your rabbit’s parents and even grandparents will affect the outcome of your new babies. The only way to know is to see how it turns out. But there are just soooo many homeless bunnies that need good homes, take more of them in instead of creating more.

Should I sell my horse?

Monday, July 14th, 2008

He is a 8 yr old, 17.3 Trakahner warmblood and i have only had him for 1 year, but he is so strong! and I do hunters and i cant get him to do lead changes he runs through them and he frustrates me so much but he wins every hack class and i have jumped him over 5 foot but he runs and takes off in shows and i cant stop him what should i do?

A big horse like that does not mature physically untill 5 or 6 and that is when the growth plates in his long bones fuse. Untill then (and beyond because he is very tall) his balance is constantly changing. I assume he is a gelding and that further complicates the balannce issue for him because an intact male has a hormone that STOPS long bone growth. The gelding doesn’t have that hormone, so he grows just a little taller than he normally would after the regular growth spurt.

The problems you are having are all at times of really stressful balance requirements for the horse. Your lead changes? Go remedial. Do your lead changes through the trot, change rein, pick up canter new lead. At first, you will need several trot steps to change rein, then just three, then two, then one, then -boom- flying change without a loss of balance. Have you ever trained a horse before? Even if you have not, there is no reason you should not be able to go back to the basics yourself and re-teach yourseslf the mechanics of movements.

If he runs out after a jump, he’s jumping too high and he’s trying to catch his balance by running to catch up with it. You should not be jumping 5 feet on him unless you are free jumping him. Again, go back to the basics and get his confidence up. Start with cavaletti, change rein over the cavaletti. Build him with the basics. His balance and trust will be increased by the basics. Yours will increase as well. Stay out of the show ring for a little while unless you have a little rinky dink one you can enter for experience. Or even to attend but not to enter so he feels like he’s a good guy and enjoys the show.

I get the feeling you are young and you have waited a long time for this horse. He is young too and you can learn a lot from him by teaching him. In the meantime, you can ride other horses too and it’s not cheating.

(Yes, he’s a good looking horse, but don’t keep him JUST because he’s beautiful! )

People will tell you to get a stronger bit, but I would argue that will make him heavier and even stronger. Fix his balance by giving him time to find it on his own. In Germany and Poland they do not even get on until the horse is 5 years old and then they don’t use anything stronger than a loosering snaffle until the horse had graduated to a stronger bit. It’s never a matter of force.

Lots of circles and keeping him busy will help him find his balance both side to side and front to back.

And if you are not willing to put in the work, sell him.

———

The answer to your question lies within what you want to and are able to do to fix the issues you’re having.

Do you just want a horse that you can go out and ride without having to do a bunch of schooling? Don’t get me wrong…there’s nothing wrong with that, I myself don’t enjoy the challenge like I used to, and I want a predictable, steady, seasoned, quiet horse to putz around with on the trail. Just a matter of preference, we can’t all want the same things.

Or, can you handle the challenge, but don’t have means or access for a trainer to help you work out these issues?

If either of those is the case, you should look for somebody more suited to what you enjoy. This is supposed to be enjoyable, sometimes people forget that.

Otherwise, if you’re up for the challenge and can get some help with schooling him, keep him for awhile and see what progress you make.

My horse acts kinda weird…?

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

so i go to this barn where i board my horse. today i was walking him outside norrmally he was eating and following and all of a sudden he lifted his head and perked his ears. he was in full concentration alert mode. i would say his name and he would bend down for grass then almost kinda skiddishly step to the side. then he flared his nostrils and blew out REALLY hard and loud. it echoed everywhere. i looked over and there was house behind the barn and a kid was sitting outside with 2 other grils and they were walking around and talking. i didnt what to do. what was he doing?!

The horse is probably reacting to a change in the atmosphere or settings. The horse probably spotted something that frightened him. He is just trying to show that he is scared and doesn’t know what to do. If the thing that the horse is scared of is an object make the horse confront the object and let him smell the object. If it is a person talk quietly to the horse and a soothing voice and let him check out the situation. Remember a horse has blind spots and can not see right in front of themself so make sure he can see the object. Do not feel stressed yourself or the horse will feed off the stress and may react in a dangerous situation.

——

Horses hearing and sight are a lot better than ours. He was aware of something that might have startled him, and was on alert. It could have been the kids you saw or something you didn’t see at all. Survival for animals means being aware of what is around them. That’s what he was doing.

Do u find cats scary?

Saturday, December 1st, 2007
  1. No I don’t and you wouldn’t either if you gave them a chance.
  2. OMG yes! and cat ppl get insulted when i get scared of their cats

as to why? i dunno something in the eyes, the way they strut…the whole superstition thing about them…..both my siblings claim they saw a black cat in their room when they awoke in the mid of the night and everything in the house was locked…both were on different occasions

  3. I definitely find cats creepy. I couldn’t tell you exactly why, but I think it is because they remind me of evil magic( you know black cats and witches).
  4. I love cats! Had cats all my life! Never had a dog. Cats are so cool!
  5. I find them intriguing! You never know what is going on in that head. And their eyes are just stunning! It is kinda creepy when they jump up and do the crazy cat run without any provocation, but hell, it’s really entertaining after the initial startle.
  6. No I like cats but some can look scary if they have no ears or something or those hairless cats, those are creepy.
  7. shave it.
  8. No not at all….but I know someone who is…..lol

Why is my 8 year old cat?

Thursday, October 25th, 2007
  1. He is marking his territory. Or take him to the vet just to make sure. But I’m pretty sure he is just marking his territory
  2. Well it COULD be just an aging cat thing, however urinary problems are common with male cats. He could have a bladder infection, or worse- kidney or bladder stones. I lost a male cat to bladder stones. Peeing around the house was the first sign of any problem, and by then it was too late. Some other health problems like diabetes and tumors can cause this too. If I were you, I’d take him to the vet right away and make sure he’s alright.
  3. some one has come inside your house with another cat scent on their shoes, cats have a good nose, so your cat smells it and trys to out spray it with it’s pee!!Try cleaning some areas with citiral oil.
  4. I won’t waste time with a lengthy answer, but.. this site here:
    http://www.hdw-inc.com/litterbox.htm
Has plenty of information on your problem, just scroll down a little to “URINE MARKING AND SPRAYING” and read up on that.
  5. Inappropriate elimination is often a symptom of urinary tract infection. The cat begins to associate the pain he experiences while peeing with the litter box, so goes elsewhere. He might also be trying to get your attention.

So your first step is to have the cat evaluated by a veterinarian. If you notice he is straining a lot but not producing much (may seem constipated), then it is urgent enough to find an emergency vet after hours. Male cats sometimes get blocked up, and then it is only a matter of hours before it is too late. If he is not completely blocked up, then it can wait until morning - but make sure to get him in to see the vet tomorrow.

Here is a link to a good article on how to solve litter box problems, in case it’s not a medical issue http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/our_pe…

  6. He is marking his territory.
  7. is he spraying or urinating?

the first thing that comes to my mind, especially with an older cat is kidney issues or diabetes. it could also be a urinary tract infection. if this is a new thing for him to do, a trip to the vets is a good idea. if its not a medical issue they can advise you on what to do for behavior problems.

how are is appetite and water intake?

What is the best way to teach a dog to fetch?

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

Get your dog to enjoy tugging. Start from scratch : use a paper bag with some pieces of liverwurst or other high-value treat and snake it around on the floor for your dog to get. The paper bag will rip right open, and your dog will get a big reward for playing with you. Do this a few times, then move to using an old sock with holes in it (still very easy for your dog to get a big payoff for interacting with you). Do these things for a while and be sure to never shove stuff into your dog’s face - always present the sock or tuggy toy by pulling it away from your dog. Make him chase it and even get the rewards while moving.
2. So now you have a dog who will play with you and looks forward to playing. This is the time to introduce the ball (you might want to get a ball on a string like this : http://cleanrun.com/moreinfo.cfm?product… )
If you need to roll the toy in liverwurst to get the dog interested in it, so be it. Keep the toy close to your body and make it very fun and rewarding to play close to you. When it’s time to start throwing the ball, keep it very close to your body. Use a part of your house that has a corner and throw the ball into the corner - the dog will be most likely to turn right around and return it to you

43. Is it OK to have one fish in a tank?

Ans. Fish have feelings in a manner of speaking, they wont cry if you insult them, but if you deprive them of company, even their health can be effected by this. Fish will live longer if kept in pairs, they will suffer less parasites and diseases with more of their own kind around, and behave differently in groups aswell.

Many fish will exert severe behavioral changes if deprived of their common brethren, such as Danio Riero, with a group less than 5-7 the fish swim around like a goldfish… you get 5 together, they constantly shoal (school) across the top of the aquarium. For fish such as this, it would be strongly illadvised to purchase individuals…

However you’ve noticed people saying bettas are best alone, and this is also true. Male bettas are fighters with zeal! they’ll not stop till the other is dead if they’re put together, even so sensitive are their tempers that aquarium dividers do not always stop them from injuring themselves while trying to get through the divider and at the other specimen… For a fish like this you would seriously need it to be alone unless it has been conditioned for spawning, and at that… you’ll only give him female company for a very brief time period.

What will truly govern your choice of fish that you purchase will be the size of the environment you’re preparing for them… You are cycling your water right? (Google.com see: Nitrogen Cycle - Focus non-terrestrial). This is an imperative step to take before purchasing fish.

So if you have a 10 gallon tank or a 60 gallon tank, it will make a massive difference in which fish you buy. More than this, there are thousands of species, the better question should be… What are you interested in?

Feel free top pop me an email if you think of a fish in particular you’d like some info on.
