Soon, a card-swipe test for instant disease diagnosis

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

University of Utah scientists say that they have created a sensitive prototype device for medical tests that is based on the same principle as a credit card-swipe machine.

The researchers say that their device could test for dozens or even hundreds of diseases simultaneously.

They say that their approach involves a card loaded with microscopic blood, saliva, or urine samples.

“Think how fast your PC reads data on a hard drive, and imagine using the same technology to monitor your health,” says Marc Porter, a Utah Science, Technology and Research (USTAR) professor of chemistry, chemical engineering and bioengineering.

USTAR research scientist Michael Granger, a co-author of the research, adds: “You can envision this as a wellness check in which a patient sample - blood, urine, saliva - is spotted on a sample stick or card, scanned, and then the readout indicates your state of well-being. We have a great sensor able to look for many disease markers.”

Writing about the novel approach in the journal Analytical Chemistry, the researchers say that unlike current lab tests that take hours or weeks to generate results, their device could provide results within minutes.

The prototype card-swipe device consists of a GMR “read head”, and sample stick. Presently, it is about the size of a PC, but Granger says that when it is developed commercially, the GMR sensor device will look like a credit card reader.

Porter expects a more advanced version will start being used to test farm animals for diseases in about two years, and a version for human medical tests might begin clinical evaluation in five years.

Scientists create glow in the dark cat to treat cystic fibrosis

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Scientists in New Orleans have created a cat that may look like a normal tabby in light but glows in the dark.

The six-month-old cat, named Mr Green Genes, has been genetically modified as part of an experiment at the Audubon Centre for Research of Endangered Species in New Orleans that could lead to treatments for conditions like cystic fibrosis.

Betsy Dresser, the centre’s director, said that Mr. Green Genes is the first fluorescent cat in the United States and probably the world, reports the Telegraph.

It was created so that researchers could learn whether a gene could be introduced harmlessly into the feline’s genetic sequence to create what is formally known as a transgenic cat.

If so, it would be the first step in a process that could lead to the development of ways to combat diseases via gene therapy.

Dresser said that the gene, which was added to Mr. Green Genes’ DNA when he was created, has no effect on his health.

Dr. Martha Gomez, a veterinarian and staff scientist at the center, said that cats are ideal for this project because their genetic makeup is similar to that of humans.

To show that the gene went where it was supposed to go, the researchers settled on one that would glow.

Leslie Lyons, an assistant professor of population health and reproduction at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis, who is familiar with the Audubon center’s work, said that the gene “is just a marker.”

“The glowing part is the fun part,” she said.

‘Heels behind the wheels are hazardous’

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Female-friendly car insurance firm Sheilas’ Wheels found that four in five women drivers admit wearing inappropriate footwear while at the wheel.

And therefore, the company is urging women to change into flat footwear before getting into the driving seat.

It is estimated that more than 11.5 million British women are putting themselves and other drivers at risk by wearing the wrong footwear.

Out of the 750 women surveyed, 75 admitted having an accident or a “near-miss” because their shoes had slipped off or got stuck between or under the pedals.

Nearly a quarter said they could not be bothered to change shoes before they got behind the wheel – even if they knew the ones they had on were not the safest for driving.

A third even admitted to wearing flip-flops while driving.

“It’s astonishing so many women are putting themselves, passengers and other drivers at risk. Stilettos, slingbacks and flip-flops aren’t the sensible choice,” the Daily Express quoted Jacky Brown, Sheilas’ spokeswoman, as saying.

The warning comes amid reports that some women are turning to Botox in a bid to repair feet damaged by wearing high heels.

The trend for having Botox injected into damaged heels also poses risks, because it causes numbness.

Michael O’Neill, a consultant surgeon from the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, said: “Numbness would last for up to 24 hours. You shouldn’t drive for at least three days after such a treatment due to loss of feeling in the foot.”

“The rule is, ‘You can’t drive until you can hop five times on a foot’, ensuring you can put the foot down on a pedal without hesitation, which is crucial if you need to make an emergency stop,” he added.

It contains a mix of programs that just about everyone could find a use for. It isn’t just limited to the common businessperson. Any family will find some use for a mix of word processors and spreadsheet programs. The real trick is getting over the first hurdle and actually learning about what you can do with them.

If you are fairly literate with computers and just want to learn more about the office suite, then you can just take an online computer training course to learn everything that you could want to know through a simple training program. This involves a lot of things working in unison. You can learn about the programs you want through instructions and then carry out the desired action in a simulation running on the site. It’s a good mix of safe guidance and hands on exploration.

All of this should work well for your Microsoft office training needs. Just a few lessons should have you ready to go with some of the more advanced features of the program. They are also a good thing to use if you are teaching someone more about Microsoft office. These programs make really good training aids.

Now, a safer, more effective TB vaccine for HIV-positive people

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Scientists at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), have developed a new vaccine for tuberculosis (TB), which they claim is safer and more effective for HIV-positive people.

The vaccine, which has been especially designed for HIV-positive people, may help curtail the global spread of the disease, as tuberculosis has been known as a biggest cause of death in people with HIV.

“The AIDS and tuberculosis epidemics are now so intertwined in many parts of the world that we can’t win the fight against one of these diseases without also taking on the other,” said Dr. Marcus Horwitz, principal investigator and professor of medicine and microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

The current vaccine against tuberculosis, called BCG, can cause serious and even fatal disease in HIV-positive people later in life, if HIV weakens the immune system, allowing the vaccine to multiply unchecked and spread throughout the body.

Aiming to solve this problem, the researchers used an innovative method to limit the number of times the new vaccine can replicate in the body — just enough to stimulate the immune system to produce T cells to fight future infection with the tuberculosis bacillus, but not enough to overwhelm the immune system if it subsequently becomes weakened by HIV.

The researchers showed that the new vaccine better protects guinea pigs from tuberculosis than the current vaccine. They also showed that the new vaccine is much safer than BCG in a severely immunocompromised animal host - mice with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID mice) that completely lack an immune system.

The new vaccine was specifically designed to be given to HIV-positive newborns and adults whose immune systems haven’t been affected much are thus capable of mounting a good immune response to the vaccine, including persons on antiretroviral therapy.

For developing the new vaccine, the scientists modified the current BCG vaccine, which is a weakened form of a bacterium closely related to the one that causes tuberculosis.

Thus, the researchers first made so that it would produce large amounts of a key protein of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, called mycolyl transferase, hence making the vaccine more potent and induce a stronger immune response.

Them, in order to make it safer, the team altered the BCG vaccine so that it was only capable of multiplying a few times after it was injected into the body. They, thus, eliminated the vaccine’s ability to acquire iron from the host; iron is an essential nutrient for the vaccine to multiply.

It is believed that since iron is a key nutrient needed by all bacteria to thrive, this approach may be applicable to other live bacterial vaccines for diseases such as anthrax, tularemia and Legionnaires’ disease.

Now, the researchers are hoping to test the vaccine in humans.

The study is published in the latest edition of the journal Infection and Immunity.

BSNL India’s most preferred broadband service provider: Government

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Public sector telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) remains the leader in the broadband services space with a market share of more than 54 percent, the government said here Monday.

‘Efficient customer satisfaction strategy is being followed due to which BSNL is presently the leading service provider with a market share of about 54 percent in broadband connections and 35 percent in Internet connections,’ Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Jyotiraditya M. Scindia said in parliament today.

He said the ‘Quarterly Performance Indicator Report’ of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), the industry watchdog, dated Oct 7 showed BSNL’s Internet and broadband services met the prescribed quality service parameters.

Scindia said BSNL had sufficient capacity for expansion of its Internet and broadband services for 2008-09, and has plans to provide affordable Internet services, with competitive tariff plans.

New Guns N’ Roses single hits radio Wednesday

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

he title track from the upcoming Guns N’ Roses‘ album “Chinese Democracy” will be available to download by U.S. radio outlets on Wednesday. Although some album tracks leaked this summer, this is the first authorized new music from the rock band in nine years.

“Chinese Democracy” the album is due November 23 exclusively via Best Buy. The 14-track set includes only three songs that have not either been performed live or leaked online in recent years.

Guns N’ Roses was last on Billboard’s airplay-based Mainstream Rock chart in 1999 with “Oh My God,” its contribution to the soundtrack for the Arnold Schwarzenegger film “End of Days.” The song peaked at No. 26. Prior to that, Guns hadn’t appeared on the tally since 1994, when its cover of “Sympathy for the Devil” from the “Interview With a Vampire” soundtrack reached No. 10.

“Chinese Democracy” marks the first Guns N’ Roses album since the 1993 covers set “The Spaghetti Incident?
